Lost Boy

When Neal was a young boy, his name was Baelfire and he came from a land with magic. There was some good, the fairies granting people of pure heart their true wishes, but there was also dark magic, which Baelfire came to know very personally when his papa, Rumplestilskin, became the most powerful Dark Magic there was - the Dark One. That changed Bae from an innocent boy, happy with his simple life, to a child who just wanted his papa back. Even knowing that it was done initially to save him from being conscripted to fight in the Ogre War, he yearned for the days when dark magic wasn't used to punish anyone his father felt deserved it, no matter how small the infraction. He became withdrawn; no child dared to be his friend and no parent wished to subject themselves to the possible wrath of their dark neighbor. Baelfire constantly begged his father to let go of the darkness, to find a way to get rid of it but soon felt that his father loved the magic more than he loved his own son. This prompted Bae to run away, lured by Peter Pan who used music only unloved boys could hear to draw them to him. Even rescued by his papa before he could make the trip to Neverland, Baelfire spent the rest of his childhood lonely and sad, desperately wishing his father could just change. When he got a magic bean to open a portal that would take both he and his father to a land without magic, hope surged through him, especially when Rumplestiltskin promised to go with his son anywhere. But then, as the portal opened, Baelfire slipped and fell through, begging his papa to come with him, but his father chose magic and let his son fall away into a different realm.

That's when Baelfire learned not to trust easily.

Erasing Bae

When he landed, Baelfire wound up in Victorian London, alone and hungry. He eventually found his way into the home of the Darling family. They adopted him as their own, but in order to save John and Michael, he let Peter Pan's shadow take him away to Neverland. Through a series of events he wound up on the ship of Captain Hook who rescued him from Pan and began teaching him the ways of being a pirate. It was something Bae thought he could do, enjoying life on the sea and navigating with the stars. He began to see Hook as family, opening up and becoming a part of the crew. It wasn't until he found out his mother had been on Hook's ship that all respect for the pirate was lost. Due to his father's stories, Bae believed Hook had taken his mother and refused to let Captain tell him the true story. He stubbornly let the Lost Boys take him away to live a life of never growing up in Neverland, away from Hook and his pirates.

On Neverland, he wasn't exactly loyal to Pan (his grandfather, unbeknownst to him), and became friends with an ex-fairy named Tinkerbell. Bae lost any shred of innocence he had left, not physically aging, but growing over the course of a hundred years or so. Once Pan finally let him go back to a land without Magic, it was the mid-90s. He had to adapt and fit in with this modern world, so his name became Neal Cassidy, and he was finally on his own. He only had to take care of himself, and it was what he preferred.

He'd finally figured out he was better off on his own.

Finding Emma.

When Neal met Emma Swan (as they were stealing the same car), for the first time in a long string of years, he finally felt like he had a home. It wasn't a physical place, it was Emma. He loved her, she made his life mean something, and his plan, always, was to be with her. To skip town after getting rid of some hot watches and go have a life in Tallahassee. Their lives for so long had been stealing to get by, pick pocketing and living off of other's left overs and now he had the chance to really be the person he wanted to be, giving Emma a life she deserved. Except, as it would turn out, fate didn't have that in store for them. She had to go be a Savior in eleven years, which meant she couldn't be with Neal. So, instead of unloading the watches, Neal disappeared and let Emma take the fall for stealing them, landing her in jail (pregnant, unbeknownst to Neal) and leaving him more devastated about the decision than he's ever let on. At the time he thought it was the right choice, he stood by it so that she could break a decades old curse, but if he could make it different somehow now, he would.

It was a pure accident that they wound up face to face again, ten years later, when his father was looking for him in New York, Emma just happened to be the one helping him, and they'd brought along Henry - Neal and Emma's son. Knowing that he'd abandoned Emma when she was pregnant horrified him but the only thing he could do, truly, was make it up to her by not abandoning her again. He loved her, he still did, but after realizing there was no way she could be with him, not after everything, Neal gave her up. They'd gone to Neverland after kidnappers who'd taken Henry there, and through tears, Emma confessed that she wished Neal was dead, that it would be easier on her if he'd died when she'd thought he had after taking a bullet for her back in Storybrooke. Neal had to move on, to concentrate solely on being Henry's dad and nothing more. He wanted to do that, to just be a father and learn everything he could about his son, but once again magic and fate were cruel and he was sent back, for the first time in years, to the Enchanted Forest where he'd been born, after the death of his father. Desperate to find a way back to Henry and Emma and to bring back his recently deceased papa, Neal found a way to do the latter by raising the Dark One from the Underworld and absorbing him into his own self. Together, he and his father shared one body, but the slow price to pay was Neal's life.

Like a true hero, the way his son always wanted him to be, Neal sacrificed himself to let his father live in order to help others understand how to defeat their newest adversary. His last words as he died in Emma's arms were to beg her to go find Tallahassee with someone else. Even with his dying breath, all he wanted was for her to be happy. After he died, and after a series of events happened with Emma, they were able to meet briefly in Neal's after life where he first asked about his boy, then assured Emma that he was fine, that he was happy.

Neal was able to move from the purgatory of the Underworld to the light of his afterlife, finally at peace.

Abilities/Skills: Just a pretty damn good thief/pickpocket.

Strengths/Weaknesses: Strengths: Good judge of character, good heart, at least a century of knowledge. Can talk his way out of situations, is great at slight of hand and hot wiring cars. Weaknesses: Not giving up to a fault (see: raising his father from the dead and super screwing things up), being too lazy to eat anything other than take out. Does lie if he thinks it's necessary, but it's not always. Also has a hard time accepting facts if they contradict what he thought was true/it's something he doesn't want to hear.

[Neal hasn't been dead so long that he doesn't get the hang of the technology in his hands pretty fast. He's not even sure what he wants to say, but if anyone out there knows him, he figures he should say something before there's an awkward run-in.

When he appears on screen he's a little scruffy looking, but relaxed.]

Guess like a few others, I'm new here. Name's Neal. I've been a lot of places and gotten there a lot of different ways. Gotta say...this is new. Anyone feel like being a personal tour guide for a day? I'll buy you a drink. Or a meal. Or just a coffee. And it wouldn't be a terrible thing to get to know other people, right? My world has a lot of things, space ships ain't one of 'em.

[He rubs a hand over the top of his head, just slightly fidgety about that. Going from enjoying your afterlife to suddenly alive again is...jarring. To say the least.]

So, Moira, let's see what you've got to offer.

[He ends the video, but keeps the device handy so that he can talk to others, should they decide to reach out and/or take him up on his offer.]
