What month and year is this application for? - November 2014
Your character's name: Neal Cassidy
Your character's canon: Once Upon a Time
Your character's dreamwidth username: cassidyneal
What name should be used for your character's tag? - neal cassidy
Is your character living or dead at their time of entry? - Dead
Please list any canonically pre-existing disabilities of a medical, physical, or psychiatric nature: None.
Please list any canonically pre-existing special abilities: He can talk to birds, but that's it. (I wanted to add a 'lmao' after that, but I didn't want to ruin the integrity of my application.)
Tell us about your character's background:
Neal Cassidy was born and given the name Baelfire in the Enchanted Forest. His mother, Milah, took care of him alone until his father, Rumplestiltskin, injured himself to leave the Ogre Wars and return home. This never set well with Milah who abandoned her family to set sail with Captain Hook.
Baelfire and his father kept to themselves, and it was a meager life. Every day, however, was a countdown to Baelfire's eleventh birthday, when he would be old enough to be drafted into the war. Rumplestiltskin had no way to protect his son and after hearing about a way to control the mythic Dark One by obtaining a magical dagger, he sought to do just that. Rumple actually became the Dark One, and it did keep Bae out of the war, but also unfortunately terrified their village. Rumple was ruthless and Baelfire pulled away, desperate for a way to make things go back to normal.
Bae went to the Blue Fairy and was given a magic bean that could take he and his father to a land without magic for a new start. But as the portal opened, Rumplestiltskin was too afraid to let go of his magic and let his son go through alone.
In a world unfamiliar to him, Baelfire fell under the care of the Darlings who already had three children: Wendy, John, and Michael. When Peter Pan attempted to lure the boys to Neverland, Baelfire took their place, winding up on Captain Hook's ship. With Milah long dead, Hook took the boy under his wing until Baelfire realized this was the man his mother abandoned him for. Rather than stay on the ship he went to Neverland where he remained for over three hundred years, never aging.
Eventually he made his way to New York, became Neal Cassidy, and in his mid-twenties met Emma Swan. Falling in love with her, they led a life of crime to survive before deciding that Tallahassee would be the place they built their life. Emma, however, had to break a curse in ten years, and she couldn't be with Neal when she did. So, he let Emma go to jail to keep her safe, not knowing she was pregnant.
Ten years later, Rumplestiltskin forced Emma to take him to New York in search of Baelfire. With Henry tagging along Neal was found, and the fact that he had an eleven year old son was shocking. Engaged to a woman named Tamara, he eventually brought her to Storybrooke not knowing she was hell bent on destroying magic. She shot him, causing Neal to fall through an open portal to the Enchanted Forest. He healed and eventually went back to Neverland, where Henry had been taken, kidnapped by Tamara. Henry was saved, but after being cursed once more, Neal discovered that the Wicked Witch of the West was planning to destroy the people he loved. Doomed to die, with his last breath he told Emma to go find Tallahassee with someone else, and managed to tell his papa he loved him. This is when he'll enter Darrow.
Your character's personality:
Neal is easy going and laid back, has a moral compass that rarely wavers, and loves deeply, though unfortunately he hasn't much of a chance to express that love with many very consistently. He does have the kind of bravery that even as a child, meant taking the place of a child being taken to a terrible fate in Neverland. Very often we've seen Neal take on burdens he doesn't have to, from being forced to make a weighty decision that changed Emma's life, to attempting to bring his father back from the dark side of magic. He is a man who died to ensure everyone he cared about had a chance at a future.
In the short time we were able to see Neal as a father, it became very obvious that he was patient, tender, willing to listen to his son, and would have done anything for him. He does have a weakness however, as sad as it is. He truly wants to be loved; after 300 years of life it's something that has been lacking. He had it with Emma, lost it, and when he met Tamara jumped in feet first. He did the same thing with his father, trusting and believing that after centuries being the Dark One, his father had changed on a dime. That betrayal when his father proved he wasn't reformed caused Neal to shut down, to push him away again. That's what he does when he feels completely slighted and taken advantage of - he pushes away and stops making connections with people.
He isn't wholly cynical though and can also be quite the comedian. He's very charming when he wants to be and can come across as trying to put people at ease. He has a smile for most everyone when his spirits are high, and his tone is very calm unless something dire has set him off. He is also a mediator when he needs to be, someone who attempts to keep the peace. But he will fight, and he is clever, often coming up with ways to best enemies when they think they've won.
Why do you want to play this character?
Neal Cassidy was given the absolute shaft in canon. He needlessly died before getting to build a relationship with his son, without really and truly clearing the air with Emma, and without repairing his relationship with his father wholly. Two out of three of those can be explored in the game. With Henry in Darrow, he can do so many things he'll never get to, impart wisdom he never got to before he died. This is his only chance to know Henry, and he needs to. With Emma in the city as well he can clear the air between them. He wanted her to be happy, he always wanted to really make sure she knew he was sorry for the past, and bringing him in gives me the chance to correct what I feel like canon ruined.
I also would like to say that I don't think this would distract in any way from having Regina as well. They're from the same canon, but other than custody arrangements (which could be discussed with Emma and relayed) he and Regina don't interact enough at all to make this a conflict. I simply want to give Neal a chance to live a life he was denied. He found his kid and was killed off which was also a blow to Henry. Both of them deserve to have this chance, and Darrow is the only way to make it happen.
Your character's personal inventory upon arrival:
One long brown coat
Blue shirt
Jeans
Black belt
Brown boots
Socks
Underwear
Sample post:
He should have known it would all go to hell as soon as Hook apologized. Not that it wasn't nice, and not that Neal didn't appreciate the sentiment. He did, truly. But that was the way things went, wasn't it? Nice heart to hearts and something happens. Falling through a portal, dad sacrificing himself, Emma falling for another man, kid kidnapped. It seemed like a pattern in Storybrooke, or hell, maybe just his family. But he wouldn't let that keep happening, not to Henry. He knew what the Wicked Witch was planning and his kid, his son wouldn't be wiped out just because someone was insane. It would kill him, but he had to separate from his father. They had to become two minds again in order to warn everyone that the witch was Zelena. With no idea how much time he would actually have after that, he had to trust everyone could figure out the rest on their own.
The hardest part about dying wasn't the dying at all. That was easy. It was knowing Henry wouldn't ever remember him. It was putting this on Emma, making her use her magic that ultimately killed him, dying in her arms. Those things, if he could change them, he would. So, his tears that did manage to fall weren't because he was afraid. They were because he was leaving two people he wasn't ready to say goodbye to yet. When he looked up at Emma, found her gaze once he focused, he tried to smile but he didn't know if he was successful.
"Go...go find Tallahassee." He begged her, needed to hear her promise that she would be happy, and with his last breath made sure his papa knew he was loved. And then, finally, for the first time in months his mind was quiet.
He relived things after that: sword fighting with Henry, teaching him how to sail, taking him for pizza. Even the better times with Emma when things were good, moments with Hook. All the good things that defined his life. And then, he woke up. A loud, gasping intake of air had the few people around him staring uncomfortably, his hand going to his chest. He was awake. Alive? He was alive, but he didn't know how or why. Or why he was on a train. If this was the after life, it sure as hell wasn't what he expected it to be.
Standing as the train came to a stop, Neal let himself off, standing on a platform and looking around. There was no Emma, no papa, no Henry. If he was dead then he didn't want them there anyway. No, he'd died so they could all live. This was where he wound up, a train station with a city in the distance, and one hand moved over his face. When he died, his last thoughts were of being able to watch over the people he loved. How he was going to do that from this place he didn't know, but he was determined to find out.
